FAQ'S

Michigan Athletic Development is the fundraising arm within the Michigan Athletic Department. It provides individuals and organizations with the opportunity to actively support and impact student-athletes with their athletic, academic and professional pursuits. There are a myriad of ways to support our Wolverines, and you can learn more here how to give through Michigan Athletics.

As one of the few self-sustaining collegiate athletic departments in the country, your support helps to fund our operating expenses and ensure that our 900 student-athletes are able to compete at the highest level in everything they do.

Our reality is that more than 20 percent of our annual budget comes from private philanthropic donations; it is your generosity that enables us to comprehensively support each and every student-athlete. Furthermore, Michigan Athletics receives:

  • $0 in Michigan tax revenue
  • $0 from the state of Michigan budget
  • $0 from the University of Michigan operating budget
  • $0 from the University of Michigan student fees

You are critical to our success. Michigan needs you. With your financial support, we can continue to put these young individuals in a position to flourish.

Your gift to Michigan Athletics directly impacts the lives of student-athletes across all 29 teams. Michigan Athletics strives to provide opportunities that will best position our student-athletes for success in all facets of their lives, at Michigan and beyond, but that is not possible without your support.

Did you know that over 50% of all donations made to Michigan Athletics last year were less than $350? Regardless of gift designation or size, your commitment to Michigan provides life-changing experiences and critical resources such as health and welfare, scholarship, academics, and leadership support to all student-athletes.

The University of Michigan has 501(c)(3) non-profit tax exempt status; our federal tax ID number is 38-6006309. Your gift may provide you with federal and state income tax benefits:

  • If you itemize deductions on your federal income tax return, you may be able to deduct your contribution to U-M from your adjusted gross income. In addition, gifts of appreciated property you owned for longer than one year may avoid long term capital gains tax. Check with your tax advisor for deduction and capital gains tax requirements and limitations for your situation.
  • Your state may also allow a credit or deduction. Again, check with your tax advisor regarding applicable state law.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act ended the ability to deduct 80 percent of charitable contributions attached to the purchase of tickets, specifically the PSC.

The program will continue as it has in years past and will now be referred to as a Preferred Seat Contribution.

Preferred Seat Contributions provide the necessary resources to address the academic, career development, and athletic needs of more than 900 student-athletes across all 29 teams. The $30M generated from the Preferred Seat Contribution program allows Michigan Athletics to remain one of the few self-sustaining athletic departments in the country. Approximately 20% of the Michigan Athletics annual budget is funded through private donations, which includes the Preferred Seat Contribution program.

Men's basketball and ice hockey PSC's will now take place in the spring and will be due May 31 of each year.
